5 Signs Your AC Is Costing You More Than It Should

Most Pleasanton homeowners assume their AC is running fine as long as the house eventually cools down. But “eventually” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and it’s costing money.

An air conditioner that’s running inefficiently doesn’t always break down or shut off. It just quietly burns more electricity, works harder than it should, and chips away at its own lifespan while your utility bills creep up month over month. Here are five signs your system is losing efficiency and what each one is actually costing you.

1. Your Electricity Bill Is Higher Than Last Summer

This one sounds obvious, but most homeowners write off a climbing utility bill as “it was just a hot month.” Before you accept that, compare apples to apples: same months, similar temperatures, same household size. If your bills are meaningfully higher than the same period last year without a clear lifestyle change, your AC is the most likely culprit.

A few common causes

  • Dirty condenser or evaporator coils — dust and debris act as insulation on the coils, forcing the system to run longer to move the same amount of heat. A 10% reduction in coil efficiency can increase energy consumption by 20% or more.
  • Low refrigerant — an undercharged system can't absorb heat efficiently, so the compressor works overtime trying to compensate. You won't necessarily notice the cooling drop right away — you'll just see it on the bill.
  • Aging or failing capacitors — a capacitor that's degrading causes your compressor and fan motors to draw more power than spec on every startup. It's a small drag, but it adds up over hundreds of cycles a month.

2. The System Runs All Day But Can’t Reach the Set Temperature

On a mild day (say, 85°F outside), your AC should cycle on and off, maintaining your set temperature without running continuously. If it’s running nonstop and your house still sits at 79°F when you’ve set 74°F, that’s a performance failure, not a thermostat problem.

This symptom usually points to one of three things:

  • Refrigerant leaks — low refrigerant means less heat transfer capacity per cycle, so the system runs longer and still comes up short. If you suspect a leak, it's worth understanding what a refrigerant leak actually means for your home — and why it needs to be addressed quickly. Left unaddressed, it also damages the compressor over time.
  • Airflow restriction — a clogged filter, blocked vents, or dirty blower wheel reduces how much conditioned air actually reaches the living space. The system runs; the air just isn't getting where it needs to go.
  • Oversized or undersized equipment — an undersized system simply can't keep up on hot days. An oversized system short-cycles (more on that below), which has its own efficiency problems.

In Pleasanton, Livermore, and Dublin, where we see stretches of 95–105°F in July and August, a system that can’t maintain setpoint on moderate days will completely lose the battle on the hottest ones while running your electricity bill up the whole time.

    3. Ice Is Forming on the Lines or the Unit

    If you spot ice on the refrigerant lines running into your home, or on the outdoor unit itself, most people assume the system is “too cold” and working too hard. It’s actually the opposite. It’s a sign the system isn’t working well enough.

    Ice forms when the evaporator coil gets so cold it can’t absorb heat properly, usually because:

    • Airflow is severely restricted (clogged filter, blocked return vents)
    • Refrigerant is low, causing the coil pressure to drop below freezing point
    • The blower motor is failing, reducing airflow across the coils
    •      

    The immediate problem is obvious: a frozen coil can’t cool your home. The longer-term problem is what happens when that ice melts. Water drips into the air handler, potentially causing water damage or triggering a safety shutoff. And if the root cause is refrigerant, every hour the system runs with low charge is an hour of unnecessary stress on the compressor.

    If you see ice: turn the system off, switch the fan to “on” to thaw the coil, and schedule an AC repair. Don’t just let it melt and restart. You’ll end up in the same cycle.

    4. Some Rooms Stay Warm No Matter What

    If your living room is comfortable at 74°F but your upstairs bedroom sits at 81°F, you might assume it’s just physics. Heat rises. But significant temperature variation between rooms (more than 3–4°F from the set point) usually signals an efficiency problem, not an architecture one.

    The most common cause is duct leaks. The EPA estimates that the average home loses 20–30% of conditioned air through gaps, disconnected sections, and poorly sealed duct joints before it reaches the living space. That air isn’t disappearing. It’s cooling your attic or garage. You’re paying to condition space you never use.

    Other causes:

    • Closed or blocked vents in some rooms, creating back-pressure and uneven distribution
    • Undersized ducts for certain zones that were never sized correctly
    • Dirty supply or return registers restricting flow to specific areas
    •

    5. Your System Short-Cycles: Turning On and Off Every Few Minutes

    A healthy AC system runs in sustained cycles, typically 15–20 minutes on, then a pause as the house holds temperature. Short-cycling means the system kicks on, runs for 2–5 minutes, shuts off, then repeats. You’ll hear the compressor starting and stopping far more often than it should.

    Short-cycling is both a symptom of a problem and a cause of additional damage:

    • Refrigerant overcharge or undercharge can cause pressure readings that trigger safety shutoffs, causing the system to cut out prematurely
    • Oversized equipment cools the area around the thermostat too quickly before the rest of the house has caught up, triggering premature shutoff
    • Failing thermostat or bad placement (in direct sunlight, near a vent, or in an area that cools faster than the rest of the house)

    The efficiency hit is significant. Every compressor startup draws a surge of power, roughly equivalent to running the system at full load for several minutes. A system that starts 30+ times per hour instead of 3–4 times burns dramatically more electricity and wears out compressor components 2–3x faster than normal cycling would. It wouldn't make me happy and it's possible it would just delay - without heat in winter - the inevitable of having to go the authorized service route in the end anyway. I will say that using Yelp I found an authorized company I liked. (I called two companies, the first one was in town and a mile away and I was not impressed. The next was a couple cities over and I used them.)I was not charged for the diagnosis. THIS IS LONG TERM THINKING AND TRUE, OLD-SCHOOL CUSTOMER SERVICE!I not only recommend Art of Comfort though I did not have more than the diagnostic piece done, I have saved their number for the future and will share it with friends and neighbors.
